Welcome again to another wonderful year of Eastside Hill Neighborhood Softball.

For those of you unfamiliar with our humble beginnings, the softball team has been around since 2004. We started with a sponsorship from Woo’s Pagoda, and were originally named the East Side Hill Pagodas. A few years later, Woo’s went out of business, and we  needed a new sponsor. We became the Eastside Hill Nightcrawlers after my group of friends came up with the cash. Alas, last year the economy hit, and we all fell on hard times. This year, at the last minute, our benevolent corporate overlords stepped in, and Veolia Environmental Services stepped in to secure our neighborhood’s rightful place on the Tuesday night schedule.

Our first game was on Tuesday the 24th. I am sorry to say that I was watching the Twins at Target field during our first game. Various reports on the Eastside Hiller’s performance have come back since Tuesday, and I’ve been able to piece together a narrative that should help us all understand what happened. Sure, it’s hearsay, but it’s better than nothing.

Hearsay Highlights:

  • Ling played softball for the first time and even found a way on base at some point.
  • Kyle got into a lineup dispute with the opposing catcher, but thankfully resolved the disagreement before the benches cleared. Let that be a lesson to all: We support dialog with our enemies, not fisticuffs!
  • One of our new ladies in right field made an amazing catch to record an out.
  • Dave the New Guy did an excellent job pitching and has put Ken Symanski on notice for the top spot in the rotation/
  • Josh has officially taken over enforcement duties on our newly formed split management team, leaving yours truly to make jokes and hit the ball to shortstop every time again.
  • Sammy’s Pizza team looks really scary, full of home-run hitters, spit-ballers, beer-drinkers, and full mustaches. They are the team to beat this year – Valleybrook should be put on notice!

We’ll be there next week at 7:00 to play against the Sammy’s Pizza. We could certainly use spectators to cheer us on. We also need ladies and dudes willing to play or be subs this year. We all have vacations at different times – you could fill an important gap in our lineup this year!

– Joe Thielen, Co-manager of the Eastside Hill Softball Team (brought to you by Veolia!)
