Model Vegetable Garden at Boyd Park

In the Spring of 2016 a prairie work crew cleaned up the abandoned raised-bed garden area next to the prairie, leaving two, long, raised beds that were in good condition. Dozens of invasive trees were hand-saw removed because they were shading this area. Then, black tarps covered the garden area throughout the Summer to kill the weeds that had taken over in the past few years. Early this year, soil from an organic Neighborhood garden that had to make way for a garage topped off the existing soil. The city Parks Department delivered wood-chip mulch.

All of this forethought and prep work inspired our Neighbor Trina Adler (above) this Spring to fence off this “weed free” area to keep the deer out and planted a now prolific garden. Next to this fenced area Trina planted pumpkins that she may be able to share with the Neighborhood this Fall. Trina has watered her area using hoses linked to the park shelter.

When a handful of other gardeners step forward our Neighborhood Association could consider establishing a larger growing area similar to other community gardens in Eau Claire. This could include a permanent fence, easier water supply and a garden tool shed for the gardens and the prairie. Contact the Association here if you are interested.
