Proposal to Remove Trees from Boyd Park Area

The Eau Claire Parks Department has approved a plan negotiated by Neighbors active in maintaining and improving the Boyd Park Prairie and improving access to the Eau Claire River. The plan needs final approval yet by the Parks and Waterways Commission. Xcel Energy has volunteered to do substantial work on both of these projects, at no cost to our Neighborhood Association or the City of Eau Claire.

For river access, Xcel would remove trees and brush at the Eau Claire River’s edge to rejuvenate the historic, sandy access point. This area is about 100 yards west of the walk bridge, on the south shore. There is a park bench north of the playground equipment that oversees this site.

For the north side of the prairie area there are about 60 invasive, mostly large trees that would be cut down. They are predominately Black Locust and Siberian Elms that constantly try to invade the prairie by wind blown seeds and underground roots. The trees are level with the prairie; the trees on the slope to the river would be left to prevent erosion. Removal of the trees would also improve visual access to the river below.

If approved, Xcel would fit it into its work plan that stays active throughout all seasons.
