July 30: Boyd Park Prairie Plant Tour
A local expert and photographer will lead a prairie tour on Monday July 30th, at 6 PM. Alon Coppens will share his knowledge of prairie flora and fauna at this 2-acre site that is maintained by the Eastside Hill Neighborhood Association. He will focus on those plants that were started from seed in November 2003.
Alon has had two sightings of the Rusty Patch Bumble Bee at this prairie; this is a species that is on the federal list of endangered list. Alon has pointed out the important role of two different trees that the Association has considered removing from the prairie: Black Locusts and Willows, both flowering early and helping the pollinating insects.
