A Testimonial in Support of NAMI from a Neighbor

My name is Steph. I took NAMI’s Family-to-Family class in fall of 2016.  At that point, I had been struggling with helping a close family member who was dealing with mental illness for a few years.  I felt helpless and frustrated and like I had nowhere else to turn.  After learning of the Family-to-Family class, a program for family members of adults living with mental illness, my mom and I both signed up. It was a turning point for us. This class taught us about different types of mental illness, including symptoms and treatments.  It also put us in the shoes of someone with a mental illness to help us understand why it can be hard for them to get treatment.  Another class was devoted to a “communication skills” workshop where we learned how to be better communicators with our family members struggling with mental illness.  The instructors of the course also had family members with mental illnesses, so they understood our struggles and listened without judgement.  Attending this class made us better advocates for our family member and it helped us know that we were not alone.
