Terry Weld’s Council President Candidate Statement – Bringing Eau Claire Together

Thank you for the opportunity to share my ideas about bringing Eau Claire together through my leadership.

Importance of Neighborhood Associations
The city has come to rely on input from neighborhood associations and business improvement districts. I want to encourage the good relationships we have built together. I also want to create new neighborhood associations in areas that are not yet organized. You all need a voice in city planning and all that the city does.

Affordable housing
Soon the cities of Altoona and Eau Claire will release a report presenting background data and proposing an approach to building up the supply of affordable housing. I am hopeful that Council will use the report to build real and attainable goals. We are in a time when the demand for housing exceeds the supply, which makes affordable housing for everyone very difficult including those experiencing homelessness, for whom the need is critical.

Needs of Everyone
I hope that we continue to be responsive to the needs of everyone in this community. While the cost of living in Eau Claire is lower than the national average, the growth and prosperity we are experiencing increases that cost while wages and revenues struggle to keep up. It is important that we are mindful of that as we plan and prepare for a new workforce generation and an aging population.

Partnerships
I want to encourage and nurture the public/private partnerships that have helped spearhead our growth. We can’t make all of this happen with just tax dollars. East Hill is a great example and I respect the investments you are making to enhance and encourage healthy growth in your neighborhood.

Fiscal Responsibility
As public leaders, we must be fiscally responsible to the citizens of Eau Claire and appreciate every dollar earned and maximize every dollar spent.
Transportation Infrastructure
I will continue insuring safer streets and walkways for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. As past chair of the Plan Commission and member of the Transit Commission I learned first- hand the importance of multi-modal transportation and walkable communities. I would like to see us make Eau Claire a walkable community.

Economic Development
My vision for developing the Eau Claire economy is ambitious -more employment opportunities and higher wages, ongoing and responsible revitalization of downtown and surrounding districts, and fewer vacant buildings with less blight. As a public sector leader, I will aim to produce a balanced community in which business development fills current voids in a proportionate distribution to the city’s population.
I truly believe that a Council President should lead the council, not steer it. I believe in common sense, supporting those you have entrusted, leading by example, and at no time will I put my initiatives and agendas before yours.
