Once there were twelve… and now there are none.
by Armond Beguhn
In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, there were twelve family, or “mom and pop” type grocery stores in the Eastside Hill area of Eau Claire.
The resident manager, or if the store was owned by a family, they lived above or behind the grocery store area, in the same building. These very thriving businesses were there to serve the local friends and neighbors. These businesses were located in the following locations:
803 Barland Street
408 Dodge Street
724 Main Street
801 Main Street
1044 Main Street
511 Chauncey Street
1319 Emery Street
1609 Hogeboom Avenue
1303 Margaret Street
1804 Harding Avenue
1807 Brackett Avenue
2131 Fenwick Avenue
Yes, at one time, there were twelve neighborhood stores, and now there are none. The last store to close it’s doors was located at 1609 Hogeboom Avenue (Timm’s Dairy).
